A day inside the old base

The Freeport is a former US naval station that never quite stopped being one. The evidence is still standing, and most of it is free to walk up to.

These are suggested places from the guide, grouped into a starting route. Adjust the order, travel time and bookings to suit your day. Check current opening hours before setting out.

Day 1

  1. Subic Spanish Gate

Stone gate built by the Spanish Navy as the entrance to the 1885 Arsenal de Olongapo; it once had gunports and served as a jail. WWII POW survivors of the Oryoku Maru sinking were held nearby in a fenced tennis court.

  2. Hell Ship Memorial

Memorial on Waterfront Road centered on the WWII sinking of the transport ship Oryoku Maru offshore in December 1944; includes a painting of the vessel donated by Japanese artist Kihachiro Ueda. Free, open 24 hours.

  3. Pastolan (Aeta community)

Aeta settlement within SBFZ/SBMA territory; part of Freeport land recognized under a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title held by the Aeta people. Documented in linguistic literature as a place where Ambala Ayta is spoken.

  4. Sky Garden Restaurant

Filipino restaurant on Rizal Highway at the corner of Aguinaldo Street, in the Freeport Central Business District.

  5. SEGARA SUITES

A hotel in its own building on Washington Street, at the Freeport's southern edge, listed and booked separately from Segara Villas and Segara Residences.
