Subic Spanish Gate
Culture
The gate marks the entrance to the Arsenal de Olongapo, the naval yard the Spanish Navy was authorized to build in March 1885. It once carried gunports and doubled as a jail. In December 1944, survivors of the Oryoku Maru's sinking were herded into a fenced tennis court near the gate as prisoners of the Japanese. The structure survived the entire American base era and now stands inside the Freeport zone.
