The shape of this guide
Subic Bay was a Spanish naval station before it was an American one, and an American one for most of a century before it became a freeport in 1992. Almost nothing was demolished in the handover. The street grid, the officer housing, the piers and the hangars are all still here, doing other jobs now.
That makes for an unusual kind of heritage day. There is no ticketed heritage quarter and no interpretive centre — just a working town laid over a military base, with the older layer visible if you know where to look.
This is a loose route through what survives, with somewhere to eat in the middle of it. Some of these are memorials rather than attractions; they are worth approaching in that spirit.
Section 01
The oldest thing standing
Spain built a naval station here in the 1880s, and a few pieces of it outlasted both the Americans and the handover. These are the places where the timeline goes back furthest.

What the memorials mark
Some of what happened in this bay is commemorated rather than displayed. These are quiet sites, and a few of them mark the deaths of prisoners of war. Read the plaques before photographing anything.
Section 03
The people who were here first
Portions of the Freeport are recognised ancestral domain of the Aeta, who lived here long before the base and who taught US personnel jungle survival at the camps up the hill. These are living communities with land rights, not exhibits — visit through the established programmes, and follow their lead.

Lunch, somewhere in the middle
Nothing thematic. Just the kitchens that sit closest to the route, for the hour when walking around a former naval base stops being interesting and starts being hot.
