Hell Ship Memorial

Memorial on Waterfront Road centered on the WWII sinking of the transport ship Oryoku Maru offshore in December 1944; includes a painting of the vessel donated by Japanese artist Kihachiro Ueda. Free, open 24 hours.

The Oryoku Maru left Manila on 13 December 1944 carrying more than 1,600 Allied prisoners of war. US Navy aircraft, unaware of the prisoners aboard, attacked the ship as it neared Olongapo; it sank two days later, and only 403 of the original prisoners survived the war. The memorial displays a painting of the ship donated by Japanese artist Kihachiro Ueda and sits within the Subic Bay Historical Center's collection on Waterfront Road.
