Stories

The stories beneath the surface.

The guides help shape a day. These stories go deeper — into the quieter case for wellness, the forest behind the Freeport, the people who kept the old base alive, and the history resting on the floor of the bay.

Every story lists its sources at the bottom. Where those sources disagree, or where we could not confirm something, the piece says so plainly instead of picking the version that reads better.

Wellbeing

Wellness, without the retreat

Subic does not need a retreat schedule to feel restorative. The better version begins with the bay, moves through the forest, and leaves enough room for the day to change its mind.

History

The eight thousand who kept Subic Bay

When the US Navy left in 1992 it abandoned a city-sized base with nobody to run it. What happened in the following weeks is the reason there is a town here at all.

Seasonal

The best time to visit Subic Bay

Subic has two sharply defined seasons and almost no middle ground. January sees around 5 mm of rain; August sees 864 mm. Timing changes the trip more than any other decision.

Planning

The Freeport’s districts, explained

The Subic Bay Freeport is not one place. It is eleven formally defined districts spread over a bay, and knowing which is which decides where you should stay.

Nature

What the forest kept

A closed military base is an accidental nature reserve. Subic spent most of a century off-limits, and the rainforest, the mangroves and one of the world’s great bat colonies are what came out the other side.

Adventure

A bay full of wrecks

Subic Bay holds one of the densest concentrations of historic shipwrecks anywhere within sport-diving depth — a century of naval history sunk in a single sheltered harbour, and closed to divers until 1991.
