El Capitan (ex-USS Majaba)

WWII freighter (USS Majaba) that sank in a 1946 storm near Ilanin Bay, now lying on its port side in 4-22m of water. Its shallow depth and intact hull make it the most beginner-friendly of Subic's wreck dives.

Built in 1919 as the SS Meriden, the ship entered US Navy service as USS Majaba and survived a wartime torpedo strike to its engine room before serving as floating quarters. She sank in a storm in 1946 while awaiting return to civilian ownership. Lying on her port side in 4 to 22 meters of water with large, accessible holds and a boiler room, local dive shops rate her as the most approachable of Subic's major wrecks, open to divers from Open Water level.
